100 turbines installed in 100 days… On June 24th2010 Vestas installed the 100th and final wind turbine at the Thanet Offshore Wind Farm, off the coast of Kent, England. But how was it possible to erect this amount of turbines in just 100 days? Vestas managed to load 9 complete turbines on the installation vessel decreasing the amount of time the vessel spends in port and in transit to and from site, thereby maximizing available time at the installation site. Vestas engineers devised a new blade stacking system efficiently carrying 27 blades per load taking full advantage of the vessel’s bulk capacity and making a load of 9 complete turbines possible. Furthermore a new blade gripper was developed allowing safe installation in stronger wind speeds and enabling each turbine to be erected in just one day. Portable generators made it possible to test the turbines’ auxiliary systems, even before the grid supply was available. … And therefore the final commissioning could be completed in just one day. By installing an average of one complete turbine a day, Vestas Offshore has shattered the industry record… And the Thanet project definitely blazes a new trail for installation of offshore wind parks in the future.
