Manufacturing
Hello, my name is Rose Yun Liu
and I’m Production manager here at Vestas.
‘Quality Control’ . . . it’s one of those phrases
that everyone uses these days
but without really thinking about exactly what it means.
Is it just ticking boxes to make sure everything is
pretty much as it should be before it gets shipped?
At Vestas – most definitely not.
To us quality control means predicting unacceptable variation
before it occurs, and making the adjustments needed
to get back on track.
This is what it takes to deliver Business Case Certainty.
A value chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
You can design a world-beating product…which Vestas does.
You can test and verify that design…
which Vestas is doing like never before.
But in order to deliver certainty that our wind turbines
will perform to expectations, we need to have full control
of all the processes required to produce it.
Variation in production can cause defects
leading to unexpected product performance at your site.
And we know that this impacts your revenue and your cost.
In production, we are relentlessly committed to ensuring
that product performance meets your expectations.
This means ensuring that each and every component
we produce matches the quality of our verified product designs.
We strive to predict and prevent product defects in the factory…
so our customers don’t experience them at site.
To accomplish this, Vestas has employed a 6 sigma philosophy.
Over the past few years, we have identified
all the production processes which are critical
to predictable product performance across all product platforms.
We have developed Critical to Quality metrics for these processes,
and installed the quality controls to monitor them.
We now have the ability to monitor production variation
component by component.
When monitoring shows that variation is creeping
toward the set limits, we make changes to stabilise production
and prevent defects from being manufactured into the component.
This applies to all Vestas factories! But this, of course, is not enough.
We are working with our sub-suppliers
to gain the same level of control… and many are already there.
On average, we are performing at a performance level of 4 sigma.
And we have targeted 5 sigma by the end of 2010.
That amounts to only 1 defect in every 4,291 components we produce.
This is a fair amount of certainty for a 300MW site.
Delivering Business Case Certainty to our customers
means being in control. And at Vestas, we are gaining control.
That’s why, as a customer, you can be confident
that every single component will perform predictably in the field.
Which means you will have more certainty
around your power generation
and your costs over the lifetime of your project.
We have integrated quality controls in production
and assembly to make sure our production
is not a weak link in the chain.
Which means there are no weak links in your business case.
